Canon PowerShot Cameras
________________________________
Canon’s PowerShot line of digital cameras are extremely popular (indeed, the PowerShot ELPH 100 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 4X Optical Zoom is the best-selling camera on Amazon.com) . . . and, why not?
They are made by Canon, one of the most respected camera manufacturers in the world . . . the quality-to-price ratio is exceptional . . . and they look great!

Let’s take a look at what makes the PowerShot cameras so special. (Some of these features are limited to the models indicated). (When you see that the PowerShot ELPH 100 HS boasts virtually all of these features, and you look at the price, it’s no wonder it’s a best seller. I’m getting one for myself! I’m particularly excited about the HD video recording options, with the dedicated video button.)
Video Recording
Smooth, high-quality video clips can be captured at Full HD (1920 x 1080), HD (1280 x 720), VGA (640 x 480), or QVGA (320 x 240) resolutions. The Face Detection feature is available in movie mode for retaining excellent focus of the faces in your clips. Additional features include video with stereo sound and a convenient dedicated movie button to instantly start recording video.
Dynamic Mode
Dynamic Mode suppresses camera shake even when you’re shooting wide-angle video while walking. The system operates automatically (with Image Stabilizer set to Continuous), keeping your HD video smooth and steady.
Dedicated Movie Button
Select PowerShot models are equipped with a convenient dedicated movie button. Pressing the button will make the camera instantly record Full 1080p HD or 720p HD video without having to go through camera menus to access the video function.
Movie Digest
Putting together a video containing highlights from family vacations, important occasions and other special events is now easier than you might imagine. Using Movie Digest, you can have the camera automatically record a short video clip (up to approximately 4 seconds) every time you shoot a still image. The camera will then combine an entire day’s worth of clips into a single video. No editing required – Movie Digest does all the work, so you can sit back and enjoy your video!
Miniature Effect for Movies
This fun, creative feature enhances perspective to give your video the fascinating look of a scene shot with miniature models. In addition, selective frames are removed to enhance the effect when you play back the scene at 30 fps.
Super Slow Motion
Capture amazing sports, plays or add some creative flair to special moments with Super Slow Motion Movie. The camera records clips at a high speed (up to approximately 240 fps) so you can play back videos in slow motion.
Sharing Video
iFrame Movie
The Apple® movie format, iFrame, is now supported on select PowerShot models. Videos recorded in the iFrame format are designed for optimal performance in iMovie ’09® and iMovie ’11®. Video files are smaller yet also retain high-resolution quality, making them easier to import and edit and upload onto social networking sites. iFrame can be used with compatible Mac and PC applications.
Mini-HDMI Connector
Enjoy watching your HD videos and still images captured on your PowerShot camera, directly onto your HDTV by simply connecting with a Mini-HDMI Cable. The cable lets you experience HD footage with no analog degradation of image or audio in the signal, and displays up to 130 images at once. Select PowerShot models also support HDMI-CEC technology. You’ll be able to control the playback of your images and videos on a CEC-enabled HDTV using the TV’s remote control. (CEC – Consumer Electronic Control – is part of the HDMI specification, enabling components in a system to communicate with one another.)
YouTube Upload
Now you can upload your video to YouTube using Canon software instead of your Web browser. The software makes it quick and easy to share your video clips with YouTube’s global audience.
Optical Technology
Every PowerShot camera has one – a genuine Canon lens. Over 70 years of innovation in Canon optics technology has secured the loyality of professional photographers worldwide and inspired generations of remarkable images. A great lens is at the heart of every great image.
UA Lens
The UA lens is a Canon exclusive: a glass-molded aspherical lens with an ultra-high refractive index that delivers incredibly bright, clear shots. Its amazingly small size is a major factor in keeping the PowerShot cameras so compact.
Wide Angle Lens
With innovative Canon optical technology, a slim and compact PowerShot camera can be equipped with a Wide-Angle Lens to deliver all the expansiveness and sense of distance you can only achieve with Wide-Angle shots.
HS System
The Canon HS SYSTEM combines a high-sensitivity sensor with the powerful DIGIC 5 or DIGIC 4 Image Processor to create a revolutionary way of taking photos. It dramatically enhances image quality in numerous shooting situations, even in unforgiving lighting environments with a high ISO speed. Images will have less noise, resulting in sharper and clearer photos than ever before.
Noise Reduction
Experienced photographers know that high ISO speeds can coincide with increased levels of noise: aberrant or stray signals that degrade image quality. With Canon’s exclusive DIGIC Image Processor, there is no need for compromise. DIGIC offers a major boost in noise reduction signal processing to compensate for the higher ISO settings it enables.
Low Light Mode
Low Light mode gives you considerable shooting flexibility. The camera automatically adjusts the ISO speed setting range based on surrounding brightness, subject movement and camera shake to give you clear, steady shots even when lighting is not optimal.
Intelligent Contrast Correction
Intelligent Contrast Correction controls the compensation level in pixel units to brighten dark areas while leaving bright areas unchanged. This produces better images where the main subject is dark, as well as more natural transitions. You can also set Intelligent Contrast Correction in playback mode to adjust images that were shot without the setting activated.
iSAPS
PowerShot cameras automatically find the optimal settings for Autofocus, Auto Exposure and Auto White Balance systems using iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) technology. iSAPS combines advanced prediction algorithms with statistical frequencies for key factors based on over 70 years of Canon’s accumulated data. Effortlessly and in any situation, you’ll get the sharp focus and proper exposure that turn good images into great ones.
Smart AUTO
Scene Detection Technology
PowerShot’s Scene Detection Technology automatically analyzes faces, distance, brightness, color and movement information. The camera detects the whole scene in the frame and passes its data to Smart AUTO which then selects the proper setting for the scene, allowing the camera to deliver optimal image processing for the situation. This is an improvement over the previous Auto shooting mode, as it handles the following special scenes:
- Advanced Subject Detection. Incorporated into the Smart AUTO feature of select Canon PowerShot cameras, the new Advanced Subject Detection system tracks not only faces but also other moving objects, for example, animals and automobiles. This ensures proper focus and exposure for a much wider range of shooting situations.
- Spotlight. Now it is possible to get a great shot of a performer lit by a spotlight. Spotlight Mode detects a spotlight scene, then calculates proper exposure from the bright areas to deliver a fully detailed image with highlights intact.
- Strong Facial Shadows. Even if dark shadows obscure portions of your subject’s face, you’ll capture a beautifully clear, well-detailed image. When a shadowed face is detected, flash output is optimized, shadowed portions are lightened, and highlight blowouts are prevented with dynamic range correction.
- Moving Subjects. By keeping the shutter button pressed halfway, Canon PowerShot cameras equipped with Servo AF/AE will continue to automatically focus on a subject and adjust the exposure on subjects either coming toward or receding from the camera.
- No Lost Photo Opportunities. The shooting time lag is less than the older Auto mode, and people can be captured beautifully with no lost photo opportunities. It reduces object blur by extending the ISO number. With AF in constant operation, focus on moving subjects is maintained until you’re ready to get your best shot.
- Backlit Subjects. Face Detection AE detects darkened faces and will automatically make adjustments to brighten them. If the subjects’ faces are still too dark, the flash will fire. Face Detection FE allows the flash to provide optimal brightness without washing out the subject.
- Macro Shots. Whether you’re taking photos of a person or objects, the camera detects the subject’s distance and switches between Normal and Macro focus modes.
- Images Without Flash. For macro photos, decisions about long exposures or flash use are also made automatically. Even if darkness is detected, long exposure time is given preference over flash whenever possible.
- Images With Dark Backgrounds. Night Snapshot mode automatically detects subjects against a darkened background. To capture an even-balanced photo, the flash is fired to illuminate the subject. At the same time, the shutter speed is lowered to lengthen the exposure time in order to properly capture the background preventing it from being too dark.
Night Scenes. Night scenes typically require a higher ISO which can result in background noise. Scene Detection Technology suppresses noise. At the same time, gradations in dark areas are reduced, making black colors stand out.- Cloudy Skies and Bright Scenes. The system makes minute adjustments to gradations, delivering sharpness to scenes with low contrast ratios. Conversely, if washout is detected, the dynamic range is expanded, resulting in brilliant highlights. Correctly identifying the scene once again results in a more beautiful image.
- Blue Skies or Sunsets. When these scenes are detected with the Scene Detection Technology’s color information, either the blue saturation is emphasized to make the blue sky look better or the orange saturation is emphasized and the exposure is slightly reduced to make the sunset look better.
- Snow Scenes. Snow and other high-contrast scenes can result in washed out light areas and darkened subjects. With such scenes, the system dynamically expands the range of gradations to reveal detail in the snow, keep subjects bright and provide richer colors.
Smart Flash Exposure
Shooting Mode
PowerShot cameras offer shooting modes that make it easy to take perfect photos in a wide range of shooting situations by providing intelligent presets with optimized settings. Special Scene modes give you advanced presets to ensure the best possible photos under difficult shooting conditions. The number of shooting modes, including Special Scene modes, will vary depending on the PowerShot model you choose.

High Speed Burst
High-Speed Burst mode lets you capture rapid action frame by frame, so you can see the detailed movements of your subjects — a useful tool for sports analysis. Simply press and hold the shutter button to let the camera shoot a sequence of images one after another.
Face Detection Technology
Your most cherished images often feature faces, and Canon’s advanced Face Detection Technology gives every face its best chance to shine. The technology finds the face(s) in the frame to give it optimal focus, exposure, flash and white balance. You can select a single face among a group to focus and track, and even enlarge it to help you capture the perfect moment.
Misc. Features
Smart Shuffle
Smart Shuffle makes playing back a large number of pictures more fun. Simply choose an image, and the camera will choose three more with similar colors, faces or other characteristics. A great way to find images you haven’t seen in a while!
Numerous PowerShot cameras allow you to switch easily among a variety of aspect ratios. There are aspect ratios perfect for displaying images on HDTV, printing 5″ x 7″ or 3.5″ x 5″ images, creating square images, or attaining ideal portrait proportions.
Accessories
There is a full range of accessories available for the PowerShot, including:
High Power Flash
Compact and elegantly designed, the High-Power Flash HF-DC1 requires no accessory shoe. It has a strong light output at guide number 59 (ISO 100 ft.) and a wide 28mm angular field (35mm film equivalent) for proper illumination up to approximately 30 feet.
To cover an even wider field, the High-Power Flash HF-DC2 supports models with a maximum wide-angle focal length of 24mm.* It has an output guide number of 59 (ISO 100 in ft.) or 34.4 (ISO 100 in ft.) when the wide panel is attached.
Recording Media
- SDXC Memory Card – All new PowerShot cameras accept SDXC memory cards. This next-generation of storage features massively increased capacity (up to 2 terabytes!) and notably faster operation.
Eye-Fi Memory Card – Select PowerShot cameras make it easy to use an Eye-Fi™ memory card by displaying Eye-Fi functions and connection status right on the LCD screen.
Waterproof Cases.
Canon’s protective cases let you take the excitement of digital photography outside in any weather and underwater at depths of down to 130 ft. Built-in diffusers prevent glare. The waterproof case weights lets you adjust buoyancy to prevent the camera from floating underwater.
In summary, it is clear that we are big fans of the Canon PowerShot line of digital cameras . . . and, if I had to pick one, I’d have to say that the Elph 100 HS is a tremendous feature-filled bargain!

In our opinion, most people will be happy with this device as long as they understand a couple of things:
1. It will not replace your Windows or Mac machine completely if you use applications such as Photoshop (however, for most people, there are online photo editing applications that will do most of the same things as Photoshop). It runs on Chrome OS only. You can’t load Windows or Mac based programs. However, for the average person, there are few, if any, Windows or Mac applications, or replacements therefor, that are not available online – from office suites to video and photo editing applications to games.
2. Although most online or “cloud” applications will run offline, it is assumed that you will be connected to the Internet most of the time when you use the Chromebook. You can get 3G access for your Chromebook, but we think you are probably better off buying the Wi-Fi version using your existing home Wi-Fi or the ubiquitous free Wi-Fi hot spots found all over (or, you could use your smart phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot or buy a Wi-Fi Hotspot from a provider like Verizon or Sprint. That way you can use the web on multiple devices instead of just paying for 3G access on your Chromebook.) If you don’t have Wi-Fi access of some kind, and you don’t want to pay for 3G service, this is not the computer for you.
The benefits of the Chromebook are certainly compelling:
1. It’s lightweight
2. It boasts extremely long battery life.
3. It is fast!
4. There are a ton of free Chrome apps that will do just about anything you could want (including, of course, Angry Birds!).
5. Saving on the Cloud – All your files, etc. are linked to the cloud so you do not have to back up regularly, as you would with a regular notebook.
6. Regular automatic updates. Google releases updates to Chrome OS about every 2-3 weeks, keeping it stable and secure.
